An Introduction to Islam

Islam is a monotheistic faith followed by more than one billion people across the world. Muslims believe in one God, known in Arabic as Allah. Arabic-speaking Christians and Jews also use the word Allah to refer to God.

The word Islam means peace and submission to God. It refers to a way of life based on faith, worship, moral responsibility, and care for others. A person who follows Islam is called a Muslim.

Islam teaches that God created humanity with purpose and provided guidance through prophets to help people live just, meaningful, and ethical lives.

Core Beliefs in Islam

Muslims believe in:

  • One God (Allah), who is merciful and just

  • Angels, created by God

  • Prophets sent to guide humanity

  • Revealed scriptures, including the Qur’an

  • Accountability and the Day of Judgement

Islam teaches that belief should be reflected in good character, honesty, kindness, and responsibility towards others.

“Indeed, Allah commands justice, kindness, and generosity…”
Qur’an 16:90

Prophets in Islam

Muslims believe that God sent many prophets throughout history, including:

  • Adam

  • Noah

  • Abraham

  • Moses

  • David

  • Jesus (peace be upon them all)

Muslims hold all prophets in high respect. Islam teaches that Muhammad (peace be upon him) was the final prophet, sent with the Qur’an as the final revelation.

The Qur’an

The Qur’an is the holy book of Islam, believed by Muslims to be the word of God revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) over 1,400 years ago.

It addresses matters of faith, worship, ethics, family life, justice, and personal conduct. Muslims recite the Qur’an in Arabic, but translations are widely available to help people understand its meaning.

Islam and Daily Life

Islam encourages Muslims to:

  • Be honest and trustworthy

  • Treat parents, neighbours, and the vulnerable with respect

  • Care for the environment

  • Act with fairness and compassion

Faith in Islam is not limited to worship, but is reflected in everyday behaviour and how one contributes positively to society.
